Finally a Commercial That Features Gay Individuals! K-Y Promotes Their New Lubricant.

K-Y is a brand that sells "personal lubricants" which are advertised as a product that will enhance one's sexual experience. I've seen the commercials which present various couples who unwittingly decide to try a K-Y product and then are amazed by the experience with their partners.

It was just a few minutes ago that I was channel surfing and landed upon the below commercial advertising  K-Y Intense lubricant.

K-Y Brand INTENSE television ad
Transcript:

Alex: People always ask us how we stay together for so long, and I think that it’s communication.

Emma: And K-Y Intense.

Alex: I’m sorry, what —

Emma: I bought this K-Y Intense. I was going to tell you — it’s this gel that stimulates arousal so that the big moment will feel like nothing we’ve ever felt before. It’s scientifically proven too —

Alex: Good purchase.

As I watched this commercial my mouth was gaping wide. I was elated. This is the first time a gay couple has been presented in a national commercial. What took so long?

Ever since The Ellen Show (2001-2002) we have been exposed to gay couples on TV. Whether it is the ever so popular Will & Grace (1998-2006) or various characters featured on comedic and dramatic TV programs. I have often found myself in front of the TV watching obnoxious advertisements for this and that, wondering how gay individuals must feel as they view a sea of commercials that represent only straight individuals.

At the end of the K-Y commercial I wondered if K-Y started with women as generally it is more acceptable for two women to be together. Pornography and general media will often pair two ladies together in attempts arouse men and garner income. I was pleased however, to see two women who did not fit the over-sexualized mold.

One qualm I have with the commercial and all of the K-Y commercials is that they tell us that their lubricants will offer sensations that no one has EVER experienced before. In other words we as consumers NEED this product. Of course this is how all ads hock their products. They tell us that our lives are not complete without the latest dish soap or tropical scented fabric softener. Never the less I am proud and grateful to K-Y for venturing out and making the first move.

I am so excited about this new commercial and I am planning on sharing the news to everyone I know. And don't think that I don't recognize how sad it is that gay representation is so limited that I am giddy with glee over this ad.

Kudos to K-Y.
