Sexist Halloween Costumes

I was perusing a feminist website that I often enjoy reading called Appetite For Equal Rights. Last year around this time the author of the site posted on the topic of sexist Halloween costumes.

She mentioned that she had visited a site called Buycostumes.com and had found that in the girls section of the site there were only 16 costumes marked "occupation" while the boys section have 73. Does this disturb anyone else? It also should be noted that the majority of occupations designated to young girls were stereotypical in nature such little nurses and baker costumes. The boys were designated occupasions such as doctor, train engineer, and astronaut.

Then of course in the adult female section there was a plethera of skimpy outfits. And while adult men are able to choose from costumes choices such as a judge, astronaut and surgeon the women get to dress up as trophy wives or MILFs ("Mom I'd Like To Fuck").

So, what does this say about the head haunchos at Buycostumes.com? What does this say about our society at large? It seems that certain individuals think women fit into a limited category. Or perhaps certain individuals prefer women to remain in a limited category.

Halloween is a time to play dress up. But really, these sexist costumes aren't far from real life. There are plenty of women who celebrate the attitude of wanting to be MILF or trophy wife. And there are plenty of men who expect women to uphold physical standards.

Why are we celebrating these choices?
